CATRACT

It is loss of clarity of natural crystalline lens which primarily occurs as a senile change however any age group can be affected.
Initial symptom of cataract includes frequent change of glasses, glare, double vision, loss of contrast, inability to tolerate sunlight and diminision of vision. Diminision of vision occurs depending upon severity of opacificaton of crystalline lens.

Cataract patient requires surgery wherein natural opacified lens is replaced with artificial lens called intraocular lens implant(IOL)

Surgery is indicated if vision is impairing day to day life of patient due to cataract.

IOL

In majority of cases this type of IOL are implanted.With this type of IOL the distance vision is corrected however patient requires glasses for near.
These type of IOL are used if patient wants to get rid of glasses for near and distance, however this type of IOL is not a good choice if patient is indulged in night driving.
If patient is having high cylinder no. this type of IOL is used.
There are two types of IOL materials available Hydrophilic and hydrophobic . The chances of formation of posterior capsular opacity is less with hydrophobic materials.
– Patient should use the drops prescribed by the doctors properly.
– Head bath can be taken 5 days after surgery.
-Patient can resume back to work within a week after cataract surgery.
– Should do regular follow up with your surgeon.

GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is disease affecting optic nerve causing progressive damage of visual filed.
Any age group can be affected.
Elderly patients with family history of glaucoma, history of hypertension, diabetics are at risk. Also patients with refractive error are at risk of developing glaucoma.
Usually it is diagnosed on routine check up with your doctor as in initial stage it doesn’t carry any symptoms.So regular check up with your ophthalmologist is a must if you carry any of the risk factors for developing glaucoma.
Initial treatment options are drops and lasers, if can’t be controlled by drops then surgery is advised.
